Istanbul Modern opened in 2004 as Turkey's first museum of modern and contemporary art, presenting art from Turkey alongside international works. Its collection brings painting and sculpture into conversation with photography, new media and works on paper, from the decades after 1945 to the present. Collection
The museum's purpose-built home at Galataport, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, faces the Bosphorus on the Karaköy waterfront. Its permanent and temporary galleries sit alongside education spaces and a cinema, while works such as Refik Anadol's Infinity Room: Bosphorus connect the collection to the waterway through environmental data, light and sound.
Its collection strengths include modern and contemporary art from Turkey, post-1950 painting and sculpture, and photography and new media.
